ISDN Caller ID Software

This survey of Caller ID software accompanies my Computer Caller ID FAQ at http://www.ainslie.org.uk/callerid.htm. If you have come here via an external link such as a search engine, I recommend that you have a look at the FAQ first before looking at software. Except where otherwise stated, the programs on this page are Caller ID programs for ISDN hardware interfacing to Windows 95 or NT via CAPI 2.0. This means you must have CAPI2032.DLL - Gunnar Woldmo has a utility to check that your system is CAPI 2.0-compliant. I've not got ISDN, so I have no idea which of these programs are any good, so I've put them in alphabetical order - I'd welcome any recommendations. For non-ISDN software, see the links at the bottom of the page.

Since ISDN has been so much more successful in Germany, most CAPI programs have been written by Germans in German, although some have realised that English translations will have a much wider audience. In a lot of cases, it doesn't actually matter if you're just seeing a popup with a phone number. At the moment the software is fairly basic - simple Caller ID popups and voicemail systems. This is slowly changing as development tools become available - search for ISDN on my developer's page - but I know people who have had to resort to extracting functions out of CAPI2032.DLL and writing VB function calls for those functions. The definitive list of CAPI applications is maintained by the CAPI Organisation; you'll find all the experts in comp.dcom.isdn.capi

The original was "designed for the [Motorola] BitSurfr Pro terminal adaptor", (now discontinued), but he has now added a version for the BT Ignition adaptor (which is a slightly modified BitSurfr). From what I've heard, the interface isn't great, but it works and is better than nothing.

The Kai-inspired interface was a bit different, but sadly it's been discontinued. You can unlock a copy with a user name of "Frei Version" and a key of CJTDG-UAUQW-RMMPR-DWNMB.

PacCID
Vendor : Vicente Marianito
Website : No longer at http://paccom.digiweb.com/paccid/ - I think Vicente is now at www.marianito.net?
Price : 2.500$00 (~US$14) single user, 5.000$00 (~US$28) for the network version
Language : Portuguese
Unfortunately my Portuguese isn't up to working out the finer points of this CAPI program, but apparently it can link numbers to callers, can automatically assign numbers to countries, and can share the data with other computers on a LAN. The shareware version will only allow 3 calls per session. (thanks Rui)

I can't really do this program justice here, but if you are willing to pay for it, this offers a full communications suite for ISDN users including features like a fax server and some kind of development of environment. However, a lot of people will buy it just because it gives Outlook Caller ID capability, never mind the fact that it claims to be able to OCR incoming faxes directly into Outlook.

SmartID
Vendor : P.J.M. van Dinther
Website : Fomerly http://www.geocities.com/Athens/3683/
Download :
Price : Freeware
Language : Dutch and English
My Dutch isn't quite up to understanding all the features, but the ability to link to a Dutch CD of phone numbers is notable. Sister program to Smartkriezer - again, I think Paul is now at www.diprode.com.

XAN Answermachine
