Caller ID Phones

This survey of British Caller ID phones accompanies my Computer Caller ID FAQ at http://www.ainslie.org.uk/callerid.htm. If you have come here via an external link such as a search engine, I recommend that you have a look at the FAQ first. This list is not meant to be comprehensive; but includes some of the more popular corded Caller ID telephones available in the UK. Cordless phones are now on a separate page.

Ascom

Ascom Berkshire MR41

Website : http://www.ascom-telecom.co.uk/terminal/new_mr41.htm
Price : ? Sold by Freerose
Standard : BT, CCA, ETSI
Memories : 20 name + number, 25 call memory

MR41
Like their DECT phones, the Ascom MR41 is not the most beautiful phone in the world, but is well built and well-featured. Aimed at businesses, it is worthy competition for the Nortels and Siemens.

Audioline

Audioline Tel21

Price : was £18 at Staples (but has disappeared), £25 from Tandy, £35 from Rocom, £43 from phoneshop.uk.com
Standard : BT, Bellcore
Memories : 33 name+number

Audioline Tel21
The cheapest Caller ID phone on the market in the UK. A bit plasticky, no new call indicator, but works perfectly well and has on-hook dialling. I suspect that this will be phased out soon in favour of the CLD60. Sold as an Ericsson in Finland.

Audioline 25

Price : ?? from Argos
Standard : BT ?
Anyone fancy sending me a pic?
Apparently this works, and is cheaper than most BT alternatives.

Audioline CLD60

Price : £20 from The Link
Standard : BT, probably cable
Picture at  http://www.phoneshop.uk.com/callerid
A new phone that looks set to become the standard 'cheap' Caller ID phone in the UK, not to be confused with the CLD50 box.

Audioline X-50

Price : £50 at John Lewis
Standard : BT, cable?
Anyone fancy sending me a pic?
This is Audioline trying to make a few quid by putting a fancy casing on a phone. It certainly tries to be stylish, although I've yet to decide if  I like it. I've only seen this version at John Lewis, although the cheaper and smaller X-20 without Caller ID is widely available.

Betacom

Preview 120

Price : £34 from phoneshop.uk.com, £40 from The Link, £50 from Maplin
Standard : BT, Bellcore

A nice multistandard phone.

Preview 120

Preview 200/220

Price : £25.30 from Incom
Standard : BT, Bellcore?
Preview 220
I think this may be just a new version of the 120.  The only difference between the 200 and 220 is that the 220 has a voice speakerphone.

British Telecom

Easicom 1000

Price : £80 from BT and Dixons group
Website :  http://www.shop-athome.bt.com/athome/plsql/show.
determine_template?atoz=true&catno=400762&keyno=200092&go.x=56&go.y=2
Standard : BT, Bellcore?
Memories : 50 incoming, 10 outgoing, 150 number address book
Easicom 1000
The 'email phone' that BT launched with great fanfare a while back.  Given that it cost £180, and email calls were charged at 25p/minute, they didn't sell many. BT have been forced to knock 100 quid off the price, and charge email connections at the g3 rate, 12p connection fee plus the local rate. Even so, the Easicom's email facility can never be more than a useful backup option.
However, if you disregard the email features, this is the best BT offering for those of us who just want a Caller ID phone.  Just being able to type in address book entries is a boon, the ADSI capabilities mean that it supports Call Waiting ID, the LCD screen is adjustable for contrast and text size, there's a 'line in use' indicator and you can even hook up an Easicom printer. I know it's a huge machine, but it's worth checking out the feature list on the website.

Easicom 200

Price : £100 from BT
Website :  http://www.shop-athome.bt.com/athome/plsql/show.
determine_template?atoz=true&catno=400762&keyno=201148&go.x=44&go.y=8
Standard : BT, Bellcore?
Memories : 50 incoming, 1700 number address book
Easicom 200
This dinky little phone-meets PDA is a nice try by BT, but I don't know of anyone using one. The Easicom 100 is similar, but doesn't have Caller ID; both have a PC Link for communication with PCs.

Relate 700CD

Price : £45 from BT, £25 from Tandy
Website :   http://www.shop-athome.bt.com/athome/plsql/show.
determine_template?atoz=true&catno=400762&keyno=201136&go.x=13&go.y=0
Standard : BT
Memories : 30 incoming, 10 name + number address book
Relate 700
BT's cheapest Caller ID capable phone - similar phones are available elsewhere for half the price, for instance the Audioline.

Relate 1000

Price : obsolete
Standard : BT
Anyone fancy sending me a pic?
This phone is best avoided - people seem to have had all sorts of problems with them.  You're much better off with its replacement, the Relate 1500 or the 1100.

Relate 1100

Price : £90 from BT
Website : http://www.shop-athome.bt.com/athome/plsql/show.
determine_template?atoz=true&catno=400762&keyno=200051&go.x=45&go.y=11
Standard : BT (Bellcore?)
Memories : 30 incoming, 20 name + number address book
Relate 1100
Decent enough phone but features such as call timing don't really justify the extra money over the Relate 1500 and it doesn't do Call Waiting ID. The price is well into DECT territory - or that of the Easicoms for that matter.

Relate 1500

Price : £75 from BT, £51.45+VAT from Incom, £50 from computer fairs
Website :  http://www.shop-athome.bt.com/athome/plsql/show.
determine_template?atoz=true&catno=400762&keyno=201138&go.x=69&go.y=11
Standard : BT, CCA?
Memories : 30 incoming, 20 name + number address book
Relate 1500
This offers advanced features such as Call Waiting ID and apparently also works on 'Bellcore' cable providers such as Cambridge Cable. I don't  like the way it looks, but it's worth considering, especially if you can get a good price.

Fanstel (Fans Telecom, Inc.)

Fanstel BT126D

Price : ?
Website : http://www.fanstel.com/calleridphones/bt126d.htm
Standard : "every DTMF, ETSI FSK, and Bellcore FSK Caller ID interface"
BT126D
This appears to be the only one of Fanstel's small range of Caller ID phones that will work in the UK.  Given the number of boxes they do, this choice will surely increase. Has anyone seen these for sale in the UK?

Nortel

These phones are not cheap, but they get a big thumbs up from uk.telecom.  They are all multistandard and have lots of nice features but the UK ones don't support Call Waiting ID.

Nortel C9316

Website : http://www.nortelnetworks.com/ (couldn't get in)
Price : was £120 + VAT from Andrews & Arnold
Standard : BT, Bellcore
Nortel C9316
Pricey, but a very nice phone aimed at businesses. The Powertouches are also good.

Sharp

Apparently the UX108 fax phone supports BT Caller ID. There seem to be different models with the same name, judging by some of the pictures I've seen. http://www.martin-dawes.com/ux108-17.htm has a description.
